To eat or not to eat?

This debate is long as time. Is it better to eat before hitting the gym or after? Well there’s actually room for both, depending on your training of course.

We need to treat food as fuel, from the very moment we wake up in the morning. Our bodies need energy to function, even just to lie in bed. Your body requires an enormous amount of energy just to keep you alive, now add in your gym routine, walking to and from work, rushing around to your appointments and walking your dog, and you’ve got yourself an energy consuming powerhouse. So many of us underestimate the importance of correctly fuelling our bodies for the day ahead but we continue to exert ourselves physically. Not eating enough of the right food will leave you tired, cranky, irritable, injury prone and not hitting your PBs at the gym.
Nobody wants that!

So, what should we be eating?

Really, it’s quite simple. In a world of fad diets, supplements and claims of over-night weight loss it’s easy to get lost in translation and it can be very confusing to know where to begin. At FIG we believe in the perfect balance in every meal. This means complex carbohydrates, protein, and greens!

It’s time to accept that carbs are our friends! They replenish glycogen – the body’s store of carbohydrate, which is used as a fuel in all forms of exercise – and keep energy levels high, carbs are important both before and after exercise.

Protein power is essential. Protein is important for muscle recovery and repair, as well as keeping your hunger at bay. Good protein sources should include lean meat, fish, chicken breast, organic dairy, eggs, legumes, nuts, seeds and beans!

Finally, your greens are your best friend! Leafy greens are filled with nutrients, vitamins and minerals that are essential for your overall health, recovery and digestion.

When you simplify meals in this way, you begin to understand that eating healthy and fuelling your engine really isn’t as difficult as the industry would have you believe.
