The power of the smoothie

They’re delicious, they pack a nutritious punch and they’re so easy to make, so, who doesn’t love smoothies? They can give you energy, boost your immunity and crush your sugar cravings all within a few slurps. If they’re not forming part of your weekly meal plan, they definitely should!

It’s no coincidence that the ingredients listed below feature in one or more of our smoothies. At FIG we’re all about delicious food that serves a purpose. Food that makes you feel good! That is precisely why we have decided to share our favourite smoothie boosters with you, so that you can get that FIG fix even when you’re not near.

What’s your flavour?

1. Pineapple

Not one to frequently feature on these lists because it’s been around for a while, but we’re here to put pineapple back in the spotlight! It is heaven for your digestive system due to it’s high content of Bromelain, which is a powerful enzyme that helps digest protein. It also provides great relief of joint pain and muscle inflammation. So if you’re a gym lover, pineapple should be your new best friend. The added bonus? 2. Raw Cacao

You know how you get that happy feeling after you’ve had some chocolate? Well raw cacao is responsible for it, but when you have it without the additional contents of a chocolate bar, it doesn’t leave you with a gut ache. Instead, it makes your entire body happy as it nourishes it with magnesium, iron and calcium (more calcium than a glass of milk!) It also happens to feature heavily in our Fig Jam smoothie, so make sure you give it a try – it tastes even better than it sounds!

3. Turmeric

Hailed the ‘Golden Spice’ and widely used by naturopath’s as medicine, turmeric dramatically increases the anti-oxidant capacity of the body. It is incredible at fighting against inflammation, in fact it is incredible for your entire body and we could probably write an entire article on Turmeric alone (only if you want us to) – try it in our Ginga Ninja smoothie with honey, ginger, oats and banana.

4. Avocado

Surprise, you don’t only have to smash it on your toast! Ground-breaking, we know! Not only can a tiny chunk make your smoothie seriously creamy, and your skin and hair even creamier, it will help you power through your day like nothing else! Our brain loves healthy fats, and now that you know this top secret, you might realise that you’re far more efficient when you’ve had some in your breakfast! Our Spin Me Spirulina smoothie would be the perfect example of the ideal breakfast smoothie. Featuring avocado, apple, kiwi, spinach, agave, cucumber, coconut water and a spirulina booster. We warn you now, you might get so much done in one morning you won’t have anything to do the entire week, so pace yourself!

5. Coconut Water

If you know you’ll be active, coconut water will be your saviour. Because coconut water is high in potassium, and such a great electrolyte replacement, it has even been used for IV hydration in emergency situations, and we all know that post training hunger and DOMS is an emergency situation! 6. Berries

If someone offered you a pill that helped you feel full, lose the extra kilos and prevent disease, you’d take it right? And what if it tasted amazing too? Fortunately, you don’t need to visit your doc for the prescription. In fact, you just need to visit the markets and load up on a wide selection of fresh or frozen berries! Their high levels of phytochemicals help protect your cells from damage while keeping you mentally sharp! We love them in our Dr.Beet smoothie, paired with beetroot, raw cacao and agave.
